Agrobiodiversity: Chontaduro

Come see how the chontaduro crop is produced in the Colombian Amazon

The chontaduro is the fruit of an Amazonian palm tree and contains nutritional and aphrodisiac properties. Chontaduro harvest and festivals are the lifeblood of the Villagarzon community, a staple food in Putumayo, and a great experience if you come within season.

Globally, the preservation and use of a diverse variety of regional agricultural crops is critical for ecosystem health, global food supply, and longevity. Savimbo always supports local crops, farmers who choose to preserve polyculture farming, and organic farming methods. Many of the farmers you will visit are enrolled in our agroforestry program.

Off-season you can participate in chontaduro planting, visit a chontaduro plot, or find out more about the production of this high-quality staple food in the zone.

The best thing about the colorful chontaduro is the amazing eating you get to do, it can be served with salt or honey and has a sweet nutty taste like a butternut squash. There are also artisinal wines and flour available year round.
